Wobbly-headed Geisha Dolls - they do exist!

May 20th, 2007 by monkeyshinesbeadery

For all those FIREFLY fans out there, I found a website selling actual bobble-head geisha dolls, as mentioned in the episode “Trash”:

INARA: What was the last cargo we snuck past the Alliance to transport?

MAL: We made a perfectly good piece -

INARA: What was the cargo?

MAL: They were dolls!

INARA: They were little geisha dolls with big heads that wobbled!

MAL: People love those!

INARA: And what exactly was our net profit on the famous wobbly-headed doll caper?

Kaylee’s Jiangyin gift shop plate from “Safe”

May 11th, 2007 by monkeyshinesbeadery

This will only interest Browncoats, and it has nothing to do with jewelry, but I recently discovered the identity of the oriental plate which Kaylee picks up in the gift shop on Jiangyin in the FIREFLY episode “Safe.” In the episode, Kaylee and Inara leave Serenity to go shopping in a small, rim-world general store. Kaylee talks about getting the plate for Simon as a gift. Simon later comes in and examines the same plate, calling it crap right in front of Kaylee.

The prop they used was a Ko-Ching Beauties of the Red Mansion Limited Edition Collector Plate #9. There are several of these plates available on the internet (just use your favorite search engine), and they sell for $20-$60. It is the from a series of 12 plates by Master Artisan Zhao Huimin which portray the heroines of the classic Chinese romantic novel, “A Dream of Red Mansions” by Hung Lou Meng, written between 1755 and 1790. The plate was produced in 1988. It doesn’t actually say “Jiangyin Prairie Paradise.”

Might be a fun addition to a FIREFLY collection. I’m thinking of getting me one to go next to my buddha statue, with the pony and plastic rocket, and the medal Jayne wore in SERENITY.

SOLD Kaylee’s “Message” Necklace

Inspired by the necklace worn by the character “Kaylee” in the FIREFLY episode “The Message.” (See picture here.) Wooden beads and orange quartz stone beads. Carved bone pendant features a Chinese dragon and measures 2 inches high. Necklace made by my own hands in my private studio. I have made similar items before, and plan to make more in the future, as this piece is good for sci-fi conventions and cosplay.

See one of my Kaylee Message” necklaces in action by clicking the thumbnails below. This is Mai, who wore her necklace when she met Alan Tudyk and Summer Glau. She told me Summer complimented her on the necklace. Shiny!
