SOLD Spacepunk Bracelet

February 29th, 2008 by monkeyshinesbeadery

msb-028-spacepunk-br.jpg

$20.00 - Item#B028SPACEPUNK

I’m not entirely sure if the term “spacepunk” applies, I’ve been trying to research it on the internet with little success. But I’m going to go with it, because this bracelet is inspired by two of my loves — steampunk and FIREFLY (a sci-fi cult-classic western set, mostly, in space). It is sort of a steampunk-meets-retro-futuristic thing, featuring all kinds of found objects — metal rings, nuts, washers, glass beads, gears, chain, hematite (iron ore stone), vintage jewelry bits, and wire. This bracelet is 7-3/4 inches long, and is a one-of-a-kind unique creation, handmade in the Monkeyshines studio. Arrives in a gift box.

SOLD Victorian Steampunk Necklace

February 14th, 2008 by monkeyshinesbeadery

msb-028-steampunky.jpg

I just finished this piece last night, using filigree charms, metal tubes, brass findings and chain, vintage pocket watch parts, and Czech glass. I particularly love the floral button, which was made using a spring case from a broken pocket watch (note the gear teeth around the edge of it), a padded fabric brad from a craft store, and a brass filigree backing (see enlarged picture below for detail). The brass bit in the center is also from a pocket watch, a piece of the internal workings, and even though it was not intended to be visible while the watch was in working order, it is still engraved with lovely scrollwork. It also has some patina, as it is from a vintage, broken watch. Necklace is a one-of-a-kind unique creation, handmade in the Monkeyshines studio.

UPDATE 02.21.2008: This item was sold via eBay auction for $89.99.

Note from Jen: My steampunk jewelry is inspired by Da Vinci, Jules Verne, Oscar Wilde, H.G. Wells, the Victorian period, Belle Epoque, Edwardian era, art nouveau, and other similar historic and literary sources. I love movies like ‘Howl’s Moving Castle,’ ‘Wild Wild West,’ ‘Return to Oz,’ ‘Stardust,’ and the Harry Potter films. I loved the movies ‘Time Machine,’ ‘Somewhere in Time,’ and ‘Time After Time’ when I was younger. For several years now, I’ve been making jewelry inspired by art nouveau and earlier eras, and jewelry using vintage materials. Last year I began making pieces inspired by the steampunk mechanized brass aesthetic. While intended to be worn as jewelry, please keep in mind that my creations are also individual works of art and should be handled with care.

SOLD Steampunk Necklace: “Constance”

February 8th, 2008 by monkeyshinesbeadery

msb-018-constance.jpg

This necklace was created with watch parts, gears, brass and copper charms, on an unusual mechanical-looking chain. The centerpiece includes a part of the internal workings of a vintage pocket watch and reads “Standard Watch Co. Syracuse NY” along with the numbers “334425″ on the front. Enlarged image, below, to show details. One-of-a-kind unique creation, handmade in the Monkeyshines studio. Centerpiece measures 1-5/8 inches across, heart-shaped lock is 5/8-inch high.

I named the piece “Constance” for two reasons: Because the word constancy means steadfast and loyal devotion and faithfulness, which is represented by the heart-shaped lock on the decorative “mechanism”; and also because of the character Constance in the movie Monster House. My children and I love that movie — there is a heart-shaped lock and key in that film also, and themes of love and devotion.

msb-117-fun01.jpg

$40.00 - Item#SP117FUN

This piece is made with vintage brass tokens found in an Ohio barn, each says “For Amusement Only” and features some naturally-occurring spots of patina. Typewriter-style letter charms spell FUN. Also includes one bicycle charm (an 1880s high-wheel style bicycle), an old-fashioned metal roller skate with movable wheels, a carousel horse, and a heart. This necklace currently measures 19 inches long, with a toggle closure, but may be resized smaller upon request (use the comments box when ordering). Amusement tokens are 3/4-inch across, typewriter key charms 7/8-inch. Enlarged image, below, to show details.
