Are you from the right planet?

I guess I’ve got Firefly on the brainpan, since I’m the coordinator of the 3rd Annual Raleigh Can’t Stop the Serenity event, and tickets went on sale this month. This little nugget is based on the argument Mal has with Inara in the episode “Trash.” For all those hopeful Companion clients out there, I added it to my shop on Cafepress. Click here to see it on shirts, mugs, stickers, cards, and more.

I know this has nothing to do with jewelry, but I’m a fan of both Firefly and lolcats so I had to make a few of these!

I’ve been seen at Art Bead Scene

October 3rd, 2007 by monkeyshinesbeadery

Elaine Ray just let me know that I was featured on the Art Bead Scene blog.

It’s an interactive blog for bead artists and jewelry designers, with product reviews, monthly creative challenges, and the latest news about the bead scene.

Elaine herself makes some of the beautiful “pieces of earth” (ceramic pendants) which I have turned into magical jewelry for you! Thanks, Elaine!

Kaylee’s Jiangyin gift shop plate from “Safe”

May 11th, 2007 by monkeyshinesbeadery

This will only interest Browncoats, and it has nothing to do with jewelry, but I recently discovered the identity of the oriental plate which Kaylee picks up in the gift shop on Jiangyin in the FIREFLY episode “Safe.” In the episode, Kaylee and Inara leave Serenity to go shopping in a small, rim-world general store. Kaylee talks about getting the plate for Simon as a gift. Simon later comes in and examines the same plate, calling it crap right in front of Kaylee.

The prop they used was a Ko-Ching Beauties of the Red Mansion Limited Edition Collector Plate #9. There are several of these plates available on the internet (just use your favorite search engine), and they sell for $20-$60. It is the from a series of 12 plates by Master Artisan Zhao Huimin which portray the heroines of the classic Chinese romantic novel, “A Dream of Red Mansions” by Hung Lou Meng, written between 1755 and 1790. The plate was produced in 1988. It doesn’t actually say “Jiangyin Prairie Paradise.”

Might be a fun addition to a FIREFLY collection. I’m thinking of getting me one to go next to my buddha statue, with the pony and plastic rocket, and the medal Jayne wore in SERENITY.

“IMAGINE” original art by Jen

January 2nd, 2007 by monkeyshinesbeadery

imagine-icon.jpg

I’ve added “IMAGINE” to my Cafe Press store. I drew it back in 1995 (using pen and colored pencil), but recently reworked it digitally using the Linux GIMP application. Inspired by John Lennon’s song “Imagine,” it reminds me of those colorful tie-dyes of the ’60s… Available on shirts, cards, mugs and more at Cafe Press. The little icon above is only a small portion of the entire image, which includes a fairy, dragon, potion, stars, trees and more. The tote bag is perfect for library books!
