SOLD “Love keeps her flying” bracelet

February 11th, 2008 by monkeyshinesbeadery

msb-068-love.jpg $16.00 - Item#BC068LOVE

“You can know all the math in the ‘Verse, but take a boat in the air you don’t love, she’ll shake you off just as sure as the turning of worlds. Love keeps her in the air when she oughta fall down, tells ya she’s hurtin’ ‘fore she keens. Makes her home.” — Captain Malcolm Reynolds, “Serenity”

This bracelet is a tribute to the crew of Serenity. It features one bead for each of the nine Big Damn Heroes, plus two pewter charms, one that says “love” and one of a planet and star. Linked with silver-plated copper core European wire. While I have made other tribute bracelets before, each is a one-of-a-kind creation, with different accents, each individually designed and handmade in my private studio. The picture shows exactly the item you will receive. Standard women’s bracelet length of 7 inches, may be adjusted upon request when ordering. Gift boxed.

The beads are (beginning at left): locally-made ceramic by artist Elaine Ray, for Jayne, king of mud; blue goldstone, a man-made bead with sparkling inclusions like stars in a night sky, for River; carved bone for Simon, the doctor; faceted pink Czech glass with metal ends, for Kaylee the ship’s mechanic; brown bronzite stone for Mal; real sandalwood, for Inara, “That’s not incense”; brown Tigereye for Zoe, Browncoat warrior woman; floral cloisonne, for Wash, wearer of Hawaiian shirts; and cross stone, for Book, the shepherd.

SOLD Steampunk Necklace: “Constance”

February 8th, 2008 by monkeyshinesbeadery

msb-018-constance.jpg

This necklace was created with watch parts, gears, brass and copper charms, on an unusual mechanical-looking chain. The centerpiece includes a part of the internal workings of a vintage pocket watch and reads “Standard Watch Co. Syracuse NY” along with the numbers “334425″ on the front. Enlarged image, below, to show details. One-of-a-kind unique creation, handmade in the Monkeyshines studio. Centerpiece measures 1-5/8 inches across, heart-shaped lock is 5/8-inch high.

I named the piece “Constance” for two reasons: Because the word constancy means steadfast and loyal devotion and faithfulness, which is represented by the heart-shaped lock on the decorative “mechanism”; and also because of the character Constance in the movie Monster House. My children and I love that movie — there is a heart-shaped lock and key in that film also, and themes of love and devotion.

My steampunk jewelry is inspired by H.G. Wells, Da Vinci, Jules Verne, Oscar Wilde, the Victorian period, Belle Epoque, Edwardian era, art nouveau, and other similar historic and literary sources. While these pieces are intended to be worn as jewelry, please keep in mind that they are also individual works of art and should be handled with care.

SOLD Kaylee Tribute Bracelet

January 16th, 2008 by monkeyshinesbeadery

msb-068-kaylee.jpg$10.00 - Item#B068KAYLEE

This bracelet is a tribute to Kaylee, everyone’s favorite spaceship mechanic from Joss Whedon’s cult classics FIREFLY and SERENITY. Features pink “foofaraw” India glass and glass teddy bear bead (nods to her dress in the episode “Shindig” and her overalls in the pilot episode, respectively), on silver-plated European wire. The letters are inexpensive silver-plated beads, not pewter or sterling, which is why the price of this item is so affordable. Adjustable around 7-8 inches. One-of-a-kind creation, only one available, handmade in my private studio. The picture shows exactly the item you will receive. I make these tribute bracelets for fun, for my fellow Browncoats, and will probably make more, but each has different bead and color combinations. Gift boxed.

SOLD Dragonheart Necklace

January 11th, 2008 by monkeyshinesbeadery

msb-068-dragonheart.jpg$12.00 - Item#N068DRAGON

The centerpiece of this necklace is a ceramic bead with a glaze that, for some reason, makes me think of dragons! So, I started calling these my “dragonheart” necklaces. The bead measures 1-inch across at the widest point. Necklace is adjustable between 16-18 inches long. While I have made “dragonheart” necklaces, before, each is a one-of-a-kind creation, on different cords and with different accents, each individually designed and handmade in my private studio. This one is on a double-strand of hand-dyed silk and brown leather cord. The picture shows exactly the item you will receive. Gift boxed.

SOLD Sterling silver & hematite star earrings

January 11th, 2008 by monkeyshinesbeadery

msb-068hemastars.jpg$8.00 - Item#E068STARS

These sterling silver earrings feature hematite stone stars. Measure 3/4-inch long, not including ear wires in measurement (image enlarged to show details). One-of-a-kind creation, only one pair available, designed and handmade in my private studio. The picture shows exactly the item you will receive. Gift boxed.

Hematite is iron ore, and has a shiny metallic luster. In stone lore, it is said to aid with focus, to be “grounding” — so, while your eyes may be looking to the stars, your feet are still on the ground!

SOLD Victorian Carnival Necklace

November 27th, 2007 by monkeyshinesbeadery

msb-117-fun01.jpg

$40.00 - Item#SP117FUN

This piece is made with vintage brass tokens found in an Ohio barn, each says “For Amusement Only” and features some naturally-occurring spots of patina. Typewriter-style letter charms spell FUN. Also includes one bicycle charm (an 1880s high-wheel style bicycle), an old-fashioned metal roller skate with movable wheels, a carousel horse, and a heart. This necklace currently measures 19 inches long, with a toggle closure, but may be resized smaller upon request (use the comments box when ordering). Amusement tokens are 3/4-inch across, typewriter key charms 7/8-inch. Enlarged image, below, to show details. Only one available, handmade in my studio; the item you see here is exactly the item you will receive. Gift boxed.

While not strictly “steampunk,” this necklace does feature brass and Victoriana motifs which are part of the steam aesthetic. Not everything has to include gears, does it?
