msb-108-skeleton.jpg $18.00 - Item#HW108-SKEL

This will be my last piece for Halloween 2008. I made the pendant using a brass bezel and an image from an old art textbook, embellished with orange and black glitter and sealed with Diamond Glaze. Accented with a carved bone skull bead, faceted Czech glass, and brass chain. This is a one-of-a-kind (OOAK) creation. Designed and handmade in my studio, only one available. SOLD Spacepunk Bracelet

February 29th, 2008 by monkeyshinesbeadery

msb-028-spacepunk-br.jpg

$20.00 - Item#B028SPACEPUNK

I’m not entirely sure if the term “spacepunk” applies, I’ve been trying to research it on the internet with little success. But I’m going to go with it, because this bracelet is inspired by two of my loves — steampunk and FIREFLY (a sci-fi cult-classic western set, mostly, in space). It is sort of a steampunk-meets-retro-futuristic thing, featuring all kinds of found objects — metal rings, nuts, washers, glass beads, gears, chain, hematite (iron ore stone), vintage jewelry bits, and wire. This bracelet is 7-3/4 inches long, and is a one-of-a-kind unique creation, handmade in the Monkeyshines studio. Arrives in a gift box.

SOLD Wish Token Necklace

February 29th, 2008 by monkeyshinesbeadery

msb-088-wish.jpg $12.00 - Item#N088WISH

I just love these tokens! They’re a perfect little gift just to say “I care and I’m thinking about you.” I’ve given several away to friends and family, and then I realized that I could also use them for jewelry! This necklace features glass beads in sparkling, enchanted colors, and one star token that floats along the strand. Token says “Good for one wish” on one side, and “Wish token” on the other. Token measures one inch across. Necklace is 30 inches long, no clasp. One-of-a-kind handmade item, what you see is exactly the item you will receive. Gift boxed.

This would also make a magical tooth fairy gift! Recommended for ages 8 and up.

SOLD Kaylee Tribute Bracelet

February 29th, 2008 by monkeyshinesbeadery

msb-088-kaylee.jpg $14.00 - Item#B088KBR

This bracelet is a tribute to Kaylee, everyone’s favorite spaceship mechanic from Joss Whedon’s cult classics FIREFLY and SERENITY. Features pink “foofaraw” India and Czech glass beads, rose quartz stone, glass strawberry and glass teddy bear (nods to her dress in the episode “Shindig,” and her overalls and strawberries in the pilot episode). Her sweet, optimistic disposition and mechanic skills are reflected in the silverfoil lampwork heart and gear-like hardware. Bracelet was created with silver-plated European wire. Fits standard ladies 7-inch wrist — resizing available upon request. One-of-a-kind creation, only one available, handmade in my private studio. The picture shows exactly the item you will receive. I make these tribute bracelets for fun, for my fellow Browncoats, and will probably make more, but each has different bead and color combinations. Gift boxed.

SOLD Silver Strawberry Necklace

February 19th, 2008 by monkeyshinesbeadery

msb-088-strawberry.jpg$20.00 - Item #N088SBERRY

Mmm… Grandpa! If you’re a Browncoat, you’ll know that our favorite ship’s mechanic loves strawberries. But you don’t have to be a FIREFLY fan to enjoy this necklace featuring a Hill Tribe Silver strawberry, real garnets, pink glass, and garnet-colored vegetarian suede (see enlargement below). Measures not-quite-18 inches long, adjustable down to about 16 inches. Other than the strawberry, which measures 3/4-inch high, all the metal bits are sterling silver. Handmade in my private studio, one-of-a-kind, the item you see here is exactly the item you will receive. Giftboxed.

msb-088-strawberry2.jpg

Hill Tribe Silver is made by the Karen Hill Tribe in northern Thailand using traditional tribal methods passed down from generation to generation, and is more resistant to tarnish because it has a higher silver content than sterling (which is only 92.5% actual silver metal).

SOLD Erstwhile Bracelet and Earrings

February 14th, 2008 by monkeyshinesbeadery

msb-908-vintage.jpg$12.00 - Item#B908EW

This bracelet and pair of earrings feature wooden beads and small orange quartz stones. Bracelet also features a sepia color acrylic flower. These are new items, but the beads have a very vintage look and feel to them, so I wanted to give the pieces a kind of erstwhile style. I’ve had these wooden beads in my studio for years, and I don’t remember where I got them, but they have an interesting kind of distressed look, and a wheel pattern imprinted on them. Only one of each available, designed and made in my studio; the items you see here are exactly what you will receive. Bracelet measures 8-inches long, strung on silk, with copper-finish findings. Earrings measure 1-inch long, not including the nickel-free brass lever-back ear wires in that measurement (image enlarged to show details). Order together or separately. Gift boxed.

SOLD Victorian Steampunk Necklace

February 14th, 2008 by monkeyshinesbeadery

msb-028-steampunky.jpg

I just finished this piece last night, using filigree charms, metal tubes, brass findings and chain, vintage pocket watch parts, and Czech glass. I particularly love the floral button, which was made using a spring case from a broken pocket watch (note the gear teeth around the edge of it), a padded fabric brad from a craft store, and a brass filigree backing (see enlarged picture below for detail). The brass bit in the center is also from a pocket watch, a piece of the internal workings, and even though it was not intended to be visible while the watch was in working order, it is still engraved with lovely scrollwork. It also has some patina, as it is from a vintage, broken watch. Necklace is a one-of-a-kind unique creation, handmade in the Monkeyshines studio.

UPDATE 02.21.2008: This item was sold via eBay auction for $89.99.

Note from Jen: My steampunk jewelry is inspired by Da Vinci, Jules Verne, Oscar Wilde, H.G. Wells, the Victorian period, Belle Epoque, Edwardian era, art nouveau, and other similar historic and literary sources. I love movies like ‘Howl’s Moving Castle,’ ‘Wild Wild West,’ ‘Return to Oz,’ ‘Stardust,’ and the Harry Potter films. I loved the movies ‘Time Machine,’ ‘Somewhere in Time,’ and ‘Time After Time’ when I was younger. For several years now, I’ve been making jewelry inspired by art nouveau and earlier eras, and jewelry using vintage materials. Last year I began making pieces inspired by the steampunk mechanized brass aesthetic. While intended to be worn as jewelry, please keep in mind that my creations are also individual works of art and should be handled with care.
